I've been working on a document in Word 2016 for the past few days and, starting this morning, I'm no longer able to override the default table cell margins on a cell-by-cell basis. Thanks for your reply, Winnie. To answer your questions:Hi,Do you mean the option and settings are available but just not working for a selected cell? Please select the whole Table in Word, right-click it and click Table Properties, on the Cell tab, click Options, confirm if theSame as the whole table checkbox is unchecked or not.Yes, the settings are available, but they do not affect the selected cell(s) when I apply them. When I return to the Cell Options dialog after having modified them, I find that the settings have reverted to their default values - specifically, theSame as the whole table checkbox is checked again. Please close Word 2016 and restart in safe mode to confirm if the issue persistsI should have mentioned in my original post that I tried to start Word in safe mode - using both the CTRL button and the /SAFE switch - but received an error every time.
I just tried again now, and received the same error. The error reads:Microsoft WordWe're sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly.
Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?Three buttons are available below the message:. Repair Now.
Help. CloseI've tried the Repair Now option several times, but the message just disappears, seemingly without doing anything. Subsequent attempts yield the same message.Note that I've restarted Word, rebooted Windows, run Windows Update (no updates found), and have run the Office updater from Word ( File Account Office Updates Update Now).
Office update did not find anything yesterday, but just downloaded some updates when I tried again now. Before the update, my versions were listed as:. Office 'Current Branch Version': 16.0.6366.2056. Word (from 'About Word'): 16.0.6326.1019 32-bitAfter the update, the versions are listed as:. Office: 16.0.6366.2062. Word: 16.0.6326.1022 32-bitUnfortunately, I get the same results in a new document after the update - the per-cell options do not stick when I modify them. A quick update: In light of the fact that I can't start Word in safe mode, I manually disabled the COM add-ins that were enabled for this installation. It did not fix the problem.
Yep, it's a bug. I'm experiencing the exact same problem on every instance of Office 2016 that I've tried, and on every system that I've tried it.
This used to work just fine on Office 2013. I would consider this 100% repeatableunless someone can demonstrate otherwise. I even have old tables from Office 2013 with cells that were set to different margins from the table default, and I can't even override them back to the table default in Office 2016. Hopefullythis gets put in the bug fix pipeline ASAP.Details: Office ver. 16.0.6366.2062, Windows ver. Yep, it's a bug.

10.0.10586Cheers,This bug affects not only borders on table cells, but paragraph borders. I can change the top padding, but the bottom, left, and right padding silently revert to their defaults when applied. Still happening in Word in 2018.
It seems like Word is not recognizing that a change has been when you try to untoggle the button when all the cell margins are exactly the same as the table margins.I found the following workaround that involves temporarily changing the cell margins in order for Word to recognize that a change has been made.Select the whole table. Go to properties, cell options, and untoggle the 'same as whole'.
Then change the margins to something different and select, ok then ok. After that when you go back into the table you will see that the toggle willnow remain off, even if you then change the margins back to the same as the whole table. I just had this problem and your solution worked great! I was experiencing the same issue with not being able to set the the top and bottom cell margins to '0' since some were set to '0' and some were set to '0.01'. I changed the entire table'stop and bottom margins to '0.02', then changed them to '0' and it worked.

Yeah, we were having the same issue where I work. After converting a Microsoft Word 2016 document with Adobe Acrobat DC Pro, one of the tables had lines that would disappear and reappear as you zoomed in and out. Once I found this post anda couple of other similar posts, I figured out how to work around this bug where the margins can't be changed. Was quite frustrating.I have all of the latest Microsoft Office 2016 updates installed as of today, does anyone know if Microsoft is aware of the bug and if a fix is in the works?
